MANUFACTURE OF NON-OXIDE CERAMICS WITH ENHANCED PROPERTIES BY AQUEOUS COLLOIDAL PROCESSING

Prof. Rodrigo Moreno

Professor Institute of Ceramics & Glass, CSIC, Leader Synthesis & Colloidal Processing Group (ICV-CSIC); Madrid, Spain.

Abstract:
Colloidal processing has demonstrated to be a powerful route for the design and manufacture of ceramics and composites with complex shapes, uniform microstructures and enhanced properties. The ICV-CSIC started a pioneering activity on this topic 35 years ago, with the development of a specific methodology for the application of the colloid science and the principles of rheology in the manufacture of near-net shaped ceramics with uniform microstructures and the design of complex layered microarchitectures. This talk presents the fundamentals of the colloidal approach and shows several examples demonstrating the strong influence that a well-dispersed slurry has in the performance of non-oxide and ultra-high temperature ceramics, where a homogeneous distribution of phases and sintering aids has a key role in the development of high uniformity microstructures and therefore, enhanced thermomechanical properties.
